God Made Man successfully raised $10,000 on Kickstarter and immediately went into production. The production lasted 19 intense days over the Christmas holiday. The result: amazing footage, acting and drama.

The team is in post production now. The editing is expected to be finished by winter of 2016. Over 25 hours of footage was shot on the Sony a7rII camera, recorded to the Atomos Shogun recorder, 4KUHD, ProRes 422 HQ.

The team is also still fundraising. We're trying to raise another $18,000 for post fees, color grading, sound mastering, promotional fees, festival submission fees and travel and possibly eventually distribution fees.

For Now Productions next project has been announced: the feature film, God Made Man.  God Made Man was written by Kayla Olson and Nate Locklear and will be shot in Austin, TX late 2015-2016. 

Synopsis:

"God Made Man. I made me..."

A drifter and transgender man, Rhett Wilson and his friend Doyle Johnson, a gay drag queen with money problems, together hatch a scheme to extort a lawyer, Ted Anderson, who is running for District Attorney. Little do they realize that Ted is already deeply involved in the seedy underbelly of society. One night will change these three lonely people forever.

Vacation Film Fest

I have created a list of some indie films and tv series that I feel are an introduction to what you might get going to a film festival.  So, on your next vacation, if you're not in Toronto, Utah or Austin, TX but want to have your own mini-fest then give the below selections a shot.

Some are movies from SXSW, Fantastic Fest and others are just indie films/series. They're not for everyone but all are unique and interesting stories and they're all on Netflix.  If you don't have Netflix, many of these are OnDemand through various platforms and if all else fails hopefully you still have a movie rental business in your town.  Let me know if you watch any...

Where am I headed?  A question that keeps swimming in my brain lately.  I first look back to where I've been.  After a semi-successful run with our web series Once You Leave it's a bit daunting to think about how to "top" that endeavor.  But maybe that's the wrong attitude to have- topping something I've already done.  Yes, I want to grow as a filmmaker and storyteller.  Yes, I want to challenge myself and accomplish new goals but trying to outdo myself seems to just be a way to let myself down or worse, hold myself back from even attempting something new. 

Throughout any given day tons of story ideas permeate my thoughts.  
But which is the right story?  How will I know it's right?  I spent over two years of my life working on Once You Leave.  A new idea might seem perfect at first but will it withstand the test of time?  What do I have to say now?

Once You Leave had much more dialog than I had ever imagined it would have.
And I thought we'd have tons of room for on set improv dialog.  But every time I sat down to write the script for each episode, dialog just poured out of me.  I somehow had so much I wanted to say.  It was hard to keep quiet.  But I didn't really know where it was all coming from.  

Lately, I have been pretty focused on life and death- what is life about and what happens to us when we die?  Or course elements of faith and a higher power trickle in but more so just a feeling of, fear...  Then you add regret, lack of hope and a general feeling of despair and you get a cocktail for some pretty dark material.  Will all these feelings add up to something substantial?  Something artistic?  Or are they just post project meanderings?  

Motivation comes and goes.  To keep busy one signs on for crew positions in various productions.  But when is the right time to begin anew?  I remain hopeful for the future but I feel some big changes are inbound.  These changes could go either way, good or bad depending on how it flips.  Until then I wait...

Nate's thoughts:

What an amazingly tender piece of film art. Viewers of Malick's work are usually polar opposites, some love him, some hate him. I happen to love him. If you're looking for a typical romantic drama, with a typical plot then this film might frustrate you. But if you enjoy beautifully inspired cinematography, elliptical editing and contemplative meditations on life, love and existentialism then this film will delight. Is this Malick's best film? No, but it's a great addition to this auteur's catalog. In many ways To The Wonder feels like an addition or continuation of the world created in TheTree of Life (Malick's previous film) but more focused on love and the lack thereof...  The story is loosely based on Malick's own life which is a pleasant reward because he has been rather elusive as a filmmaker and never gives interviews.

God Made Man is the new feature film produced under For Now Productions in association with Missing Hill Productions, LLC.  The screenplay was written by award-winning producer & actress, Kayla Olson (Once You Leave) and Emmy® award-winning filmmaker, Nate Locklear.  The story is rooted in the LGBT+ community and centers around sexual identity, faith, regret and finding acceptance.

Why Once You Leave? Why Now? (pt. 1)

Why Once You Leave?  
Why would someone in this day and age of consumerism, short attention spans and an overall increase in cynical dissociation, create an intensely dramatic series that takes it's time in a deliberate pacing as it explores visceral moments and emotions and then house it all on the web with longer running times than the current norm (for a web series)? To answer that whopper, I think to understand the inspirations is the first step.  Two of the earliest for me (Nate) were:

We have had a few viewers raise issues about the handheld camera style of Once You Leave (usually referred to by them as "shaky camera") and we have a few reasons why we used this style:

ONE shooting handheld can put the director/camera operator in the middle of the action with the actors and make it possible to capture anything at any moment- to be highly mobile is a must for a story like this.

TWO the entire series stays with the lead actress, Kayla, the entire time. We never leave her. We are in her world and her world is chaotic and unsure, even crumbling in many cases.

THREE there is a lot of emotion running thru this story and the director/cameraman (Nate) felt a need to have constant movement, it's alive and breathing, there are even times where Nate used a technique he created called "drifting" where he will slightly drift or sway back-and-forth on a character that may or may not be moving.
